PCB Transformer - Moulded

Walsall Inductive Components Ltd offer a vide range of moulded PCB transformers.

The PCB transformers are made so that they observe EN61558-1, and can be produced so that they also observe standards like UL, DEMKO and VDE.

The standard PCB transformers come in a range from 0.6 VA up to 200 VA, with either 230 or 2x115 VAC primary and 1 or 2 secondary voltages.
Below are listed some different design possibilities, that can be used as inspiration when designing the PCB transformer.
Standard EI Design
EI core type, often as high as it is wide. Power from 0.6 to 200 VA.
Can be made in different housing types, with various mounting possibilities.
Low Profile UI Design
UI core type, often half height compared to the width. Power from 1.0 to 60 VA.
Made in different housing types depending on size.
Housing Types
Height or low, horizontal or vertical, with or without extra mounting possibility.
Electrical Parameters
Primary voltage(s), secondary voltage(s), ambient temperature.

Housing Types
PCB transformers can as listed in the tables above be made in different housing types with various mounting options. The choice of housing is often based on the size of the transformer and the environment it is placed in.

The standard type "0" housing without extra mounting holes is often used for smaller transformers where the weight is limited.

The weight of the transformer is in this case supported only by the pins soldered to the circuit board, extra mounting holes would only take up extra space.

   
Middle-sized PCB transformers are often made with some kind of extra mounting hole, while larger models almost always come with extra mounting holes.
There are 3 types of housing with extra mounting holes for EI PCB transformers; type "K" which has a mounting hole in each end, type "KK" which has 2 mounting holes in each end, and type "L" which has a mounting hole on each side of the transformer
An alternative to the horizontal designs is to choice a vertical design (type "SV"). The transformers are often made with a kind of cable connection to the transformer through the side.

The vertical design is often used where there is plenty of room in the height but a limited area on the circuit board.

The UI PCB transformers like the EI design also come with a possibility of extra mounting holes. Transformers made in a low profile UI design often have a extra mounting hole in each corner of the transformer housing.


Electrical Parameters
PCB transformers in EI design is normally made with 1 primary voltage and 1 secondary voltage. UI design transformers will as a result of the internal layout often have 2 primary and 2 secondary voltages.

The transformers can be designed to the required voltage on both the primary and secondary side. Standard voltages on the primary side are 230 VAC or 2 x 115 VAC, while the secondary side comes with a wide range of standard voltage.

The standard PCB transformers are designed for a ambient temperature of either 40°C or 70°C, but can be designed for other ambient temperatures.
